In this post I&#8217;ve wanted to collect in one place all of the latest periodontitis management guidelines for UK based clinicians. This information is extremely useful for dental care professionals, like general dentists, hygienists and dental therapists. This was a joint project by the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry and British Society of Paediatric Dentistry. You can find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/assets\/downloads\/Updated_BSP_BSPD_Perio_Guidelines_for_the_Under_18s_2021_FINAL_270921_vc_PDF_version.pdf\">the full version<\/a> or just check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/assets\/downloads\/Executive_Summary_Simplified_BPE_for_the_Under_18s__BSP_BSPD_updated_2021_FINAL_PDF_version_130721.pdf\">the executive summary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children should be screened from the age of 7, assessing their first molars and central incisors. I believe it is very important to screen even the youngest patients for periodontal disease. And this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/aap.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/JPER.18-0157\">main paper outlining the classification<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you practice in the UK, you should be using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/assets\/downloads\/111_153050_bsp-flowchart-implementing-the-2017-classification.pdf\">BSP implementation of the 2017 Classification.<\/a>  <\/li><li>There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/professionals\/bsp-webinars-2017-world-workshop-classification-system\">free webinars<\/a>, on different aspects of the new classification. <\/li><li>I would advise to watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/assets\/downloads\/World_Workshop_1_-_Iain_Chapple.mp4\">the first webinar<\/a> from the series, which covers the history of our knowledge and classification of periodontal diseases. <\/li><li>And I strongly suggest the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/assets\/downloads\/World_Workshop_2_-_Ian_Needleman_.mp4\">second webinar<\/a>, which explains the newest classification.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s been a while since the most recent 2017 Classification of Periodontal Diseases, yet many dental care professionals struggle with it. Through careful analysis of the scientific evidence and joint discussions, they came up with the Treatment Guidelines for Periodontitis Stages I-III. You can access for free <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/toc\/1600051x\/2020\/47\/S22\">all related original articles here<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jcpe.13290\">the main document outlining the guidelines here.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again, BSP decided to review the guidelines and present to the UK dental care professionals an adapted version. There is a whole <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/professionals\/bsp-uk-clinical-practice-guidelines-for-the-treatment-of-periodontitis\">BSP page with a lot of useful resources on the treatment guidelines<\/a>. For dental care professionals, who are not periodontists, I suggest checking out these main ones:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0300571220303109\">Full BSP paper <\/a>outlining all the guidelines with supporting evidence.<\/li><li>A very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/assets\/downloads\/BSP_Treatment_Flow_Chart_17_SCREEN_READY_ytube_link.pdf\">straightforward flowchart<\/a> detailing the 4 steps of periodontitis treatment.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G70CQ4AarR4\">Webinar on Step 1<\/a>: Patient Motivation and Risk Factor Management.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Aw35grNOPxI\">Webinar on Step 2<\/a>: Non-Surgical Treatment of Periodontitis.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How to treat Periodontitis Stage IV, then? Well, initial management is the same. We are awaiting for guidelines that should be published late this year.
